Castle
UNION of the CROWNS.
400 years ago Elizabeth 1st died unmarried and childless. The throne
of England fell to the son of Mary Queen of Scots, James VI of Scotland
who became James I of England. Both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I made
their mark on the castle and Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner here
in 1568

Citadel & Crown Court
The imposing sandstone towers known as the citadel provide an impressive
southern entrance to the city and a welcome to visitors arriving via
citadel railway station.
Near to the site of the original 12thC English Gate, it became a Citadel
on the order of Henry VIII, the City Gaol in the 17thC and the Crown
Court in 1822

years of frontier life and history (with the help of some special Roman
